Who is OLBG’s sports betting site expert?

Luke Bradshaw-Lee
Luke Bradshaw-Lee Sports betting site expert

I’ve been reviewing bookmakers for almost 15 years, and I’ve held accounts with all of the ones I write about.

My betting and football writing has appeared in The Independent, The Guardian, Eurosport and Yahoo Sports. I also led betting content at Covers, one of North America’s biggest sports betting sites.

I’m a member of the Football Writers’ Association and a judge at the Football Content Awards. I’ve reviewed more than 200 UK betting sites, so I know how quickly a headline free bet can stop looking generous once you read the terms.

OLBG’s sports betting experts have ranked the best overall UK betting sites using a structured analysis process, supported by feedback from the OLBG community of regular sports bettors. To be considered one of the best all-round bookmakers, a site must perform strongly across the factors that matter most to UK bettors. Below is a summary list of OLBG experts’ top 5 overall UK betting sites, highlighting where each bookmaker stands out.

1. Midnite - Fan First and Free Bet Club

Luke Bradshaw Lee

My take on Midnite

Midnite feels more like a traditional bookie than it used to, with horse racing the very first markets that you see, swiftly followed by football. The black background is almost a given for new bookies, but the styling is clear, with plenty of space between different menu options and markets. There are casino options, too, but the fact that esports has its own spot in the menu, outside of Sports, demonstrates the intent here.

- Luke Bradshaw Lee, - Your Sports Betting Sites 👍

Pros

  • No.1 for esports betting
  • One of the best apps in the industry
  • Plenty of regular price boosts

Cons

  • Limited live streaming

2. BetWright - Slick App with in-game Stats, bet Builder and Cash Out

Luke Bradshaw Lee

My view on BetWright football betting

If you bet football and not much else, BetWright is worth an account. The market depth is the strongest part, the in-play stats and graphics are better than most sites this size, and the app doesn't feel like a 3 year old launch. Our members agree. 4.4 out of 5 from 43 ratings puts it above bookmakers that have been around for decades. There's no Best Odds Guaranteed, no live streaming though. Treat it as a specialist rather than an all-rounder and it will do the job well.

- Luke Bradshaw Lee, - Your Sports Betting Sites 👍

Pros

  • Cutting-edge tools enhance user betting experience.
  • Industry veterans ensure a reliable platform.
  • Up-to-date technology and design.

Cons

  • Limited user feedback for assessing reliability.
  • Less brand trust compared to established competitors.

3. BetMGM - No.2 for Darts plus Full NFL, NBA and MLB Markets

A mobile and desktop view of the BetMGM sports betting screen

Luke Bradshaw Lee

BetMGM Verdict

Darts is where it stands out. It's our second-rated bookmaker in the country for it and it lands in our top 10 for basketball, cash out, Politics and Aussie Rules too, which tells you the coverage goes deeper than the headline sports. The US markets are excellent, if anything over-weighted compared with the British stuff. Customer service is the other strength, and the weekly free bets are worth having.

- Luke Bradshaw Lee, - Your Sports Betting Sites 👍

Pros

  • Excellent Customer Service
  • Ranks in our Top 10 for Politics, Basketball, Cash Out and Aussie Rules
  • Great Welcome offer and Promotions
  • Weekly Free Bets

Cons

  • Some sports could have better market depth
  • Maybe too much US Sports coverage?
  • Adequate but limited banking options

4. ProperBet - Brand New Independent Bookie with Huge Odds Boosts

Luke Bradshaw Lee

My ProperBet Verdict

ProperBet is a brand new bookie arriving in the UK. You may recognise the platform (branding aside), especially if you've used the likes of Star Sports, or AK BETS, but this is a completely independent bookmaker. ProperBet keeps things simple. There are the main sports covered, and done properly, rather than spreading themselves wide and thin. Look out for their PROPER BOOSTS - daily odds boosts on markets across a variety of different sports, including football, racing and darts.

- Luke Bradshaw Lee, - Your Sports Betting Sites 👍

Pros

  • Plenty of Proper Boosts (odds boosts) on various markets.
  • Reliable and experienced betting platform.

Cons

  • No Specials or Entertainment betting.
  • Lack of promotions generally.

5. BetAhoy - Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish Racing and Greyhounds

Betahoy desktop and mobile screenshots of their sportsbook home screen

Luke Bradshaw Lee

BetAhoy Shows Potential in my View

BetAhoy is a recent launch, and for a first-year book it's picked a sensible thing to be good at: Best Odds Guaranteed from 10am on UK and Irish racing, and on the greyhounds too, which not every bookmaker extends to. Event coverage is better than you'd expect at 39 sports, and there are regular odds boosts to go with it. It is early days, though. Worth a look if you bet racing and want BOG that covers the dogs as well, but it's a second account rather than a main one for now.

- Luke Bradshaw Lee, - Your Sports Betting Sites 👍

Pros

  • Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish races and greyhounds.
  • Huge variety in event coverage for multiple sports.
  • Regular odds boosts.

Cons

  • Live streaming just for racing and greyhounds.

🆕 New Betting Sites

New betting sites reach the UK market most months, but "new" covers three quite different things. A handful are genuinely new operators who have built their own platform. Many are new brands running on an existing white-label platform with the same software, payment processing and support team as a dozen other sites, with a different name over the door.

A few are established high-street bookmakers going online for the first time, which is a different proposition again: decades of trading history behind the name, but a new website with no online track record.

That distinction matters more than any welcome offer, because it tells you what you are actually signing up to. It is also why we show the licence holder alongside each brand below: when two sites share a licence number, they are the same operation.

The table lists every brand we have added to our reviews listing in 2026.

Ratings are based on OLBG member reviews and are provisional while review volumes are low. Background is the brand's own history, not the operator's.

Are new betting sites safe to use?

Any site holding a Gambling Commission licence must meet the same requirements as an established bookmaker: segregated customer funds, GAMSTOP integration, deposit limits and identity verification before withdrawal. On that measure a licensed new site is as safe as a long-standing one.

What differs is everything the licence does not cover, which may include how quickly withdrawals are actually paid, how readily accounts are restricted, and how support responds when something goes wrong. Those only become visible once a site has been running long enough for a body of user experience to build up. That is the reason to be cautious with a new brand, not the licensing. And a good reason to check out my full user review where I have visited, signed up and used the site for a complete test.

Do new betting sites offer better value?

New brands usually lead with a larger welcome offer, because that is the cheapest way to buy a first deposit. Value over any longer period comes from ongoing pricing, market depth and how the account is treated once you start winning. None of that is proven from the sign-up bonus. Read the wagering terms and the maximum stake on bonus funds before treating a bigger headline number as a better deal.

How OLBG Reviews and Rates Online Betting Websites

The editorial process for each review is detailed and thorough. The entire review process takes the form of careful use of the betting site from registration, first deposit and 2 weeks of using and exploring all aspects of the site. If it takes that long!!!

STEP 1 - Full Review By An Experienced Content Writer

Our Sports Betting manager, Luke Bradshaw-Lee has almost 15 years of experience in the sports and gaming industries, including time with Verizon media, Swarm and iTech Media heading up teams managing sports betting and online betting content. With this experience, he is the perfect person to explore and review betting sites offering user insights and advice for both new and established betting brands.

These are some of the factors which we review for each betting site we list at OLBG

  • Customer Support
  • Banking & Payment Options
  • Site Usability
  • Mobile site & mobile app usability
  • Range of Markets
  • Depth of Markets
  • Promotions & Offers for existing customers
  • Initial bonus or free bet terms
  • User experience
  • Ease of registration & Account Verification
  • Maximum payouts

STEP 2 - OLBG Members & Regular Sports Bettors Carry Out Their Reviews

Once we have a full written review and a base rating from the panel, the OLBG members are encouraged to try out a new betting site and provide their ratings and feedback.

At OLBG, we gather reviews and ratings for all UK-licensed betting websites from regular players so that you can compare and understand which bookmakers may be best for you. You can read through all of our bookmaker reviews and see what actual users say about the sites they use. Reading real-life experiences is the best way to learn which online bookie websites are best for you.

Our members are asked to rate each site or betting app out of 5. We have an ever-growing list, and we are always looking for new betting sites to add to the lineup.

If you go to the specific review page, bet365, for example, you can read each of the individual reviews that make up this rating.

We publish all unedited betting site reviews as long as they do not contain swearing, potentially libellous, or individual-specific dispute content. Where users have individual and specific disputes with online sites, we feel that they should discuss these directly with the site rather than creating a review. OLBG has always been happy to offer help and advice in dealing with such disputes

Our forums have many discussions where fellow members also offer their help and advice. We do, however, always encourage initial dialogue with the bookmaker sites concerned. IBAS can help with disputes with online betting sites; they are the independent gambling adjudication service to go to when users don't feel that their complaint has been resolved by talking directly.

We recommend only signing up with UK-licensed betting sites if you are from the UK, so you will always have a dispute resolution method.

STEP 3 - Regular Updates and Improvements

We update every review every month. We read every new member review, which helps us understand if a site has improved or changed. We can use this recent feedback to update the core review content.

We will also regularly ask the operator if they have made changes or improvements and update the review accordingly. If any of these changes are significantly large, such as a site redesign or a major new sport being added, then that will trigger a full new review process, and we will re-assess the entire site, going back to step 1.

You can be confident that this rigorous process is carried out with all site reviews.

STEP 4 - Detailed Comparison

We compare the top betting sites in detailed comparison guides covering the best sites for different sports and bet types. This is where we can highlight findings from our detailed reviews, and the review team can work together to discuss which operators come out on top and which don't make the grade.

So altogether, this adds up to 100s of hours of work by dozens of experts, all to help you find your next betting site.

Why a betting website may achieve a high rating at OLBG

We have reviewed all the bookmaker reviews submitted to OLBG to understand why our members may rate a UK betting site highly. These are some of the key reasons.

  • Easy to use site/app/mobile site
  • Good bonuses and offers
  • Good live streaming
  • Great coverage of events and markets.
  • Excellent customer service

Why online betting sites are rated poorly by OLBG

These are some of the key reasons given by OLBG members for giving low betting site review ratings.

  • Confusing opening account offers
  • Hard to use the site
  • No or poor ongoing offers and bonuses for existing users
  • Poor customer service - slow, unhelpful, no chat facility.
  • Charges - on deposits for example or your account balance!

OLBG has an industry leading Trustpilot rating of 4.2 from over 950 reviews. You can read our OLBG reviews on Trustpilot here.

Best Betting Sites in the UK for Football Betting

bet365 is the best UK betting site for betting on football - they top more lists from our detailed analysis than any other UK bookmaker, with a great range of promotions such as early pay out, acca bonus, odds boosts, each way on first goal scorers and substitution insurance. The market coverage is leading - if you can't find a football bet you want to make at bet365, you probably won't find the bet anywhere. Netbet, Ladbrokes, AllBritishSports and William Hill make the top five best football bookmakers.

Best Betting Sites for Horse Racing

Betfred is the best betting site in the UK for horse racing with consistently good odds, a great best odds guaranteed offering and unique promotions such as treble the odds on one winner in Lucky 15's. Integrated Racing Post data is very useful so you can just head straight to Betfred each day to choose your bets and place your bets (although don't forget about the great tips at OLBG!). Other UK betting sites which our experts note that excel for horse racing are QuinnBet, William Hill, bet365 and Coral.

Best UK Bookmakers for Tennis Betting

The best bookmaker in the UK for Tennis Betting is bet365 due to their excellent event coverage and market variety, whilst also offering live streaming, in play betting and lots of Tennis specific promotions. Bet Builders and Cash Out on Tennis isn't offered by all bookmakers but above all bet365's retirement guarantee is a feature that all Tennis bettors will welcome. Other betting sites that OLBG experts rate well for Tennis betting include Pub Sports, YetiBet, BetVictor and William Hill.

Best Betting Sites for Golf Betting

The best betting site for Golf betting for a UK punter is Star Sports due to regular promotions for golf (even the smaller events), huge range of markets per event and great in play events. This is all backed up by good golf stats to help you to choose your players. Other UK bookmakers that scored well for golf betting include BetFred, Coral, bet365 and SpreadEX.

Best Odds Guaranteed

Copybet has ranked as the best betting site for BOG off the back of making it available as soon as they put the prices up rather than a from 10 or 11am rule. They are the only UK bookmaker that do this. BOG is available on multiples too, so they keep good company with the likes of bet365, BetVictor, TalkSportBet and VirginBet.

Bet Builder

Bet builder has been around for over ten years now, arguably starting out as a social request-a-bet function. Bookmakers have to have one to be considered a player these days, bet365 were obvious early adopters and remain to this day the best betting site for their bet builder. Combining bets from different matches and even sports stand them apart. You'll not go too far wrong with Bet Builder offerings from the likes of BetVictor, Unibet and William Hill either.

Cash Out

BetMGM have surprisingly taken on bet365 in the cash out department and produced something quite special, matching the partial cashout options previously available with only one or two operators across various sports. The partial element allows punters to take a portion of their upside and to leave some still running. Maybe not the best approach, but the product's flexibility earns BetMGM a great rating and makes it a strong option alongside bet365, Spreadex, Ladbrokes and BetVictor as cash out betting sites to consider.

In Play Betting

Once the domain of betting exchanges only, live betting during shorter events like football and tennis is the staple diet of UK punters. A flexible, efficient live betting option is essential, and it's no surprise that, with the resources at hand and global presence, bet365 comes out on top as the best in-play betting site. It's not just bet365's size; it's that they haven't forgotten you, the customer, and have delivered a player-friendly interface that's easy to understand, letting punters take a portion of their upside while leaving the rest to use. Take a look at VirginBet, Parimatch, Boylesports, or Coral if you are looking for an alternative; they all have very good in-play options.

How To Choose The Right Betting Site For You

If you want to choose your own betting site rather than follow our recommendations then you need to know what to look for. We recommend that you carefully consider the following factors and assess whether the betting site you are thinking about is

  • Trustworthy
  • Reliable
  • Low Risk
  • Reputable
  • Player Friendly With Their Terms and Conditions
  • Has Everything Else You Want!

🔒 Trustworthy Betting Sites

There are over 100 online bookmakers licensed to operate in the UK. We only list UK licensed bookmakers to UK traffic on this site and if you live in the UK we would advise that you don't bet with any bookmakers which aren't licensed by the UK Gambling Commission as you may have trouble if you ever have a dispute with them.

You can see in our table of new betting sites above, we list the Gambling Commission License number. You can check out the UK Gambling Commission public register of licensed betting sites here.

✅ Reliable Bookmakers

We don't list every licensed UK bookmaker on this page. Some we don't consider to be trustworthy and reliable. This could be for a number of reasons including failing to pay what is owed, changing terms and conditions, having a poor record of customer service. These are picked up in our initial vetting process when we decide whether a betting site is reliable enough to list. They are then reviewed regularly, along with feedback we receive from our community of sports bettors at OLBG.

🟢 Low Risk Betting Sites

There are many new online bookies, some very small companies investing in growing a business in the UK. There are risks betting with small companies as they could potentially come into cash flow problems. However, if they are registered with the UK Gambling Commission, there will be certain criteria they need to meet.

🌟 Reputable Bookmakers

The best way to see this is from user experience. This is why we have collected thousands of user reviews across the different UK betting sites from the members here at OLBG. Our users will often talk about their experiences with customer services and how any issues they had were dealt with.

A reputable bookmaker will also be strong on Responsible Gambling - we only list licensed UK bookmakers on this page, licensed by the UK Gambling Commission. As part of that license, all these bookmakers must be registered with GAMSTOP. If you feel as though your gambling is out of control you can register with GAMSTOP and block yourself from online gambling. This is just one reason why you should only ever bet with UKGC licensed operators.

Reputable bookmakers will also provide lots of tools to help you to do things like set deposit limits and take time out. We have created a full guide to these tools and link to it in the footer on this page.

👥 Player Friendly Betting Sites

We have spent hundreds of hours trawling through terms and conditions, withdrawal policies, depositing terms for each of the betting sites we list so that we can provide you with all the details. Some bookmakers do make charges for certain withdrawals and you can see that in our reviews.

Everything else you want from a betting site

Opening a selection of new accounts and trying them out is an alternative to reading our guides. We are aware that some people may wish to do this and take advantage of the welcome offers available. We update our list of welcome offers daily - you can see them on our free bets page.

Bookmaker Deposit Methods

The best betting site for you may well be the one that helps you to get your money in and out of it quickly, safely and easily.  The key to which betting site you use could be down to how you want to fund your account. In this section we explore the popular funding methods for betting sites and then highlight the best site for each deposit type.
