Why Superstitions Are So Common in Bingo
Whether you play online or in a local hall, these common superstitions pop up again and again:
- 🎨 Lucky dabbers: Some players believe a specific dabber brings wins. Colour, shape, or even how long you’ve had it all matter.
- 🎯 Preferred seats: Always sitting in the same spot? You’re not alone.
- 🌿 Lucky charms: From elephant figurines to rabbit’s feet, players bring all sorts of items to games.
- 👚 Outfits and colours: Wearing a certain colour or item of clothing believed to bring good fortune.
- 1⃣ Personal numbers: Birthdays, anniversaries, or favourite numbers that just have to appear.
These traditions often start after a win — and once the habit forms, it becomes part of the bingo experience.
Real Stories From Real Players
Some examples from the OLBG community and beyond:
- “I wear my nan’s brooch every time I play. Won £500 on a full house once while wearing it.”
- “My blue dabber hasn’t let me down in years. If I forget it, I feel cursed.”
- “Me and my mate sit in the exact same spot. No joke, we both hit wins on the same night before.”
It might be psychological, but these habits make the game more immersive.
Does Luck Help in Bingo? Here’s the Truth
Here’s the truth: luck doesn't affect how bingo numbers are drawn. Online bingo uses random number generators (RNGs), and in-hall draws are just as random.
That said, belief in luck can shape your experience. Rituals create structure and boost enjoyment. A bit of superstition can help calm nerves or build anticipation. Think of it as part of the entertainment value.
And a positive mindset genuinely makes the experience more enjoyable.

The Psychology Behind Bingo Rituals
Superstitions create an illusion of control in a game of pure chance. This psychological trick boosts excitement and keeps things social.
If everyone’s got their own quirk or charm, it becomes part of the shared bingo culture.
When Superstitions Become Problematic
While most superstitions are harmless, it’s important to stay aware. If you ever feel that your rituals are leading you to overspend, play compulsively, or chase losses, it may be time to reassess.
Responsible gambling means enjoying the game for fun — not letting habits control you.
