Solheim Cup Format
There will be three days of action, each match will have one point on offer, a draw will result in a point share with half each, a total of twenty-eight points are on offer meaning a target of fourteen and a half points will win the cup.
Friday and Saturday will involve foursomes in the morning and then fourballs in the afternoon and then on Sunday, it will be single matches from all twelve players.
- Friday: Foursome in the morning followed by Fourball in the afternoon
- Saturday: Foursome in the morning followed by Fourball in the afternoon
- Sunday: Twelve singles matches
What are foursomes?
Foursomes is one of the most tactical formats in team golf and plays an important role in competitions such as the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup. Two players form a partnership and play one ball between them, taking alternate shots until the hole is completed. One player tees off on the odd-numbered holes and their partner tees off on the even-numbered holes, regardless of who holed the final putt on the previous hole. The format is played as match play, meaning the team taking fewer shots wins the hole; if both teams record the same score, the hole is halved. Because every shot affects what their partner faces next, foursomes places a premium on accuracy, course management and teamwork, while pairings and playing styles can be just as important as individual ability.
What is Four-ball golf?
Fourballs is an attacking team format used in competitions such as the Solheim Cup and Ryder Cup. Two players form a partnership, but unlike foursomes, each golfer plays their own ball throughout the hole, meaning four balls are in play within the match. At the end of each hole, only the best score from each pair counts, with the lowest of those two scores winning the hole; if the best scores are equal, the hole is halved. Because a player can rely on their partner's score if they run into trouble, fourballs often encourages more aggressive golf, particularly when attacking pins or attempting birdie putts. Successful partnerships tend to combine strong birdie-making ability with good teamwork, and with plenty of opportunities for spectacular shots and momentum swings, fourballs can produce some of the most exciting golf of the Solheim Cup.
