Top Horse Racing Betting Sites and Why
To expand upon the data presented at the top of this page, we delve deeper and explain the factors contributing to these bookmakers qualifying as the best for horse racing betting fans.
1. Betfred

| UKGC Licence Number | 39544 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | PayPal, Debit cards, Neteller, Skrill, PaySafe Card |
| Withdrawal Time | 2 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Email, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Acca Boost, FB if 2nd, Lucky15 Boost, BOG |
Betfred tops our horse racing rankings with the highest overall score on the sheet (15.3), built on genuinely strong odds (4.5/5) and one of the deepest promotions menus apart from BetGoodwin. The "Bonus King" nickname exists for a reason, Betfred pioneered bonuses on multiple bets, and its Lucky 15, Lucky 31 and Lucky 63 bonuses (10%, 20% and 25% respectively) remain some of the most generous going for punters who spread their risk across a card.
Best Odds Guaranteed runs from 8am on race day, matching the earliest cut-offs in the market, alongside Extra Places and a Free Bet for 2nd or 3rd, a genuinely useful money-back promo most bookies here don't offer. Add a 10% Winnings Boost on selected races and Betfred's racing offering feels built by people who follow the sport, not bolted on as an afterthought.
Get the Betfred welcome offer.
Pros
- Incredible Lucky15 bonuses.
- Great odds across the board.
- Best Odds Guaranteed from 8:00AM.
Cons
- Not many promotions.
2. bet365

| UKGC Licence Number | 55149 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | High |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe Card, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | Instant |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Email, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, FTP, Position Payout, BOG |
bet365 lands in second on Total score (14.3), with the single best odds rating on the sheet (5.0/5) and a promotions score that would top most rival lists (4.0). What sets bet365 apart for racing punters specifically is Position Payout, a market where every finishing position pays out something, with bigger returns the higher your selection finishes. Only one other bookmaker on this list, QuinnBet, offers anything similar, and it's a genuinely different way to bet a race rather than a simple win/each-way market.
BOG runs from 8am, live streaming covers horse racing and greyhounds, and Horse Racing Each Way Extra adds further places on selected races. Combine that with bet365's reputation for the most versatile cash-out facility of any UK bookmaker, full or an auto-cash option, and it's easy to see why bet365 remains a default first account for so many punters, racing fans included.
Get the bet365 welcome offer.
Pros
- Ranks second best for Best Odds Guaranteed in the country.
- Unlimited cap on Best Odds Guaranteed winnings.
- Among the best odds for antepost betting.
Cons
- Limited number of racing-specific promotions.
3. CopyBet

| UKGC Licence Number | 53774 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit cards, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Acca Boost, BOG |
CopyBet rounds out the top three with a Total score of 13.6, anchored by the single best BOG offering on this entire list: Best Odds Guaranteed all day, every day on UK and Irish racing, rather than a fixed morning cut-off. For punters who like to shop around for prices in the hours before a race rather than committing at 8am, that flexibility alone is worth a look. It applies to win and each-way markets, singles, accas and other multiples, for new and existing customers alike.
Extra Places rounds out a promotions score of 3.0, and CopyBet's odds rating (4.0) and stats/form coverage (2.0) are both solid without leading the pack. The one practical catch is banking: the minimum deposit and withdrawal are both set at £10, higher than most of the bookies on this list, and card withdrawals can take up to two days to clear.
Get the CopyBet welcome offer.
Pros
- BOG all day, every day on UK and Irish racing. No fixed cut-off time on the day.
- Applies to win, each-way, singles and multiples alike.
- Extra Places and Acca Booster promotions.
Cons
- Card withdrawals can take up to two days.
- Narrower promotions menu than the bookies above it in this list.
4. BetGoodwin

| UKGC Licence Number | 2927 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Good |
| Payment Options Include | PayPal, Debit cards, Skrill, Neteller |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social, Phone, Email) |
| Football Promos | FPTP, Beaten By 1/2 Length, Beaten by a Head, 2nd to a Rag, Faller Insurance, BOG |
BetGoodwin, owned by Goodwin Racing since 1998, posts the highest promotions score of any bookmaker on the entire ~98-site sheet (5.0/5), and it isn't close. Three of its racing promos (a free bet if beaten by half a length in a chase, a free bet if beaten a head or less, and Faller Insurance) aren't offered by a single other bookie in our data. Add a free bet if 2nd to a 50/1-plus winner (a promo shared with only two others) and you have the most racing-specific promotions desk on this list, bar none.
The trade-off is everything else: BOG doesn't open until 10am, noticeably later than the 8am standard set by Betfred, bet365 and others, and live streaming covers horse racing only. Odds (3.0/5) and stats coverage (0.0/5) are both modest. This is a specialist's account, not an all-rounder.
Get the BetGoodwin welcome offer.
Pros
- Best Odds Guaranteed from 7:00AM on the day of the race.
- Ability to place bets over the phone through their exclusive service.
- Decent number of promotions available.
Cons
- No form or pre-race statistics.
5. William Hill

| UKGC Licence Number | 39225 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe Card |
| Withdrawal Time | 30 minutes |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Bet Builder Boost, BOG |
Founded in 1934, William Hill is one of the oldest names in British betting and it shows in the polish of its racing offering: best-in-class odds (5.0/5) sit alongside a promotions score of 3.0 and two racing-specific extras: "Lengthen Your Odds", which boosts prices on every race, and "Pick Your Places", letting punters choose which races carry extra each-way places. William Hill is also one of only four bookies in this list to offer a Bet Builder Boost, a genuinely rare promotion held by fewer than five operators across the country.
BOG opens at 10am, and live streaming covers horse racing and greyhounds. With 35 sports covered overall, William Hill spreads itself wide without losing the racing-specific extras that make it worth a closer look for regular punters.
Get the William Hill welcome offer.
Pros
- Among the best odds across the industry.
- Fantastic form and statistics, with racecards for every meet.
- Build your own racecard feature.
Cons
- No Best Odds Guaranteed for Irish races.
6. Unibet

| UKGC Licence Number | 45322 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | PayPal, Debit cards, Apple Pay, Skrill, Neteller |
| Withdrawal Time | < 20 minutes |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Acca Boost, Free Bet if 2nd, BOG |
Unibet ties William Hill on total score (12.3) but gets there differently: solid odds (4.0), the joint-best promotions score in the top ten (4.0) and BOG from 8am, matching the earliest cut-offs on this list rather than trailing them. Live streaming is where Unibet pulls ahead of most rivals, covering horse racing alongside football, tennis, rugby, cricket, table tennis, baseball and American football, and the site runs 36 sports in total.
On promotions, Unibet combines Extra Places, Odds Boost and Acca Boost with a Free Bet if 2nd or 3rd, a useful money-back option, even if it's shared with six other bookies rather than being a rarity. It's a well-rounded rather than specialist racing account, which suits punters who bet across multiple sports from one login.
Get the Unibet welcome offer.
Pros
- Among the best horse racing site for antepost betting.
- Solid promotions offering.
- Racing Post tips and write ups for all UK races.
Cons
- No Lucky15 bonus.
- No Best Odds Guaranteed for multiples.
7. Coral

| UKGC Licence Number | 54753 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | High |
| Payment Options Include | PayPal, Debit cards, Apple Pay, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe Card |
| Withdrawal Time | Within 3 Hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Free Bet if 2nd, BOG |
Coral is another old-school, historic brand that still does the big sports well, and that definitely includes horse racing. Coral scores 12.0 overall, with balanced odds (3.0), promotions (3.0) and BOG framed simply as running for the "day of the race" rather than a fixed morning start time, in practice one of the more flexible guarantees on this list. Live streaming covers horse racing plus football, tennis and volleyball, and with 38 sports in total Coral is one of the broadest sportsbooks here.
Extra Places and a Free Bet if 2nd or 3rd round out the racing promotions, and on the biggest race days of the year Coral has been known to pay a 5th place on selected each-way markets, worth checking on Grand National or Cheltenham week specifically. Coral Connect also links online and in-shop accounts, letting punters withdraw online winnings in a betting shop, a genuinely distinctive feature for anyone who still likes to bet on the high street.
Get the Coral welcome offer.
Pros
- Solid across the board for all aspects of horse racing betting.
- Best Odds Guaranteed at any time on the day of the race.
- Great Lucky15 bonus.
Cons
- No Best Odds Guaranteed on multiples.
- Not as good antepost odds as the rest of the Top 10 on this list.
8. QuinnBet

| UKGC Licence Number | 61011 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | PayPal, Debit cards |
| Withdrawal Time | Instant in some cases |
| Customer Support | 24 hours |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Bet Builder Boost, 2nd to Fav, BOG |
Irish-owned QuinnBet posts a Total score of 11.3, and it's the only bookie on this list holding two genuinely rare promotions at once: a Bet Builder Boost (shared with just three others) and 2nd To a Fav. Add Tricast, Forecast and Yankee Boosts and QuinnBet's racing promotions desk punches well above its overall size.
That size shows elsewhere: QuinnBet covers just 20 sports, the narrowest offering in the top ten, BOG doesn't open until 10am, and live streaming is limited to horse racing and greyhounds. This is a racing specialist that has chosen depth over breadth, and it's worth judging on those terms rather than as an all-round sportsbook.
Get the QuinnBet welcome offer.
Pros
- More horse racing promotions than any other bookie, including free Tricast and Forecast bets.
- Fallers Insurance, Extra Places and money back as a free bet if your horse finishes 2nd to the favourite.
- Best Odds Guaranteed from 8:30AM.
Cons
- No live streaming available.
9. BetVictor

| UKGC Licence Number | 39576 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | High |
| Payment Options Include | Debit cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | Instant |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social, Email) |
| Football Promos | Odds Boost, BOG |
BetVictor is one of the longest-established bookmakers in this list and it shows in the polish of the product. BetVictor posts a Total of 11.2 on the back of the best odds rating in the bottom half of this top ten (5.0/5) and a genuinely distinctive racing promo: "Run For Your Money", which refunds your stake in cash if your horse loses all realistic chance of winning at the very start of the race. It isn't captured in the sheet's promotion flag columns, but it's a real and useful protection that few rivals offer in any form.
BOG opens at 9am, splitting the difference between the 8am leaders and the 10-11am laggards further down this list, and live streaming is limited to horse racing only. The BetVictor Predictor free-to-play game, with prizes up to £50k, adds a bit of extra value for engaged users without costing anything to enter.
Get the BetVictor welcome offer.
Pros
- Incredible odds across the board.
- Brilliant live streaming options.
- Best Odds Guaranteed on UK and Irish races, and multiples, from 9:00AM on the day.
Cons
- Limited number of promotions.
10. Virgin Bet

| UKGC Licence Number | 54310 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit cards, PayPal |
| Withdrawal Time | Instant |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social, Email) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, Money Back on ITV Races, BOG |
Virgin Bet, owned by Virgin Bet Ltd since its 2019 UK launch, closes out our top ten with a Total of 11.1. It's the only bookmaker on this list — and one of only a handful across the entire ~98-site sheet — offering Money Back as a free bet specifically on ITV-televised races, a genuinely rare promotion built around the UK's biggest terrestrial racing coverage.
BOG opens at 10am, live streaming spans horse racing, football, tennis, basketball and American football, and Extra Places rounds out a promotions score of 3.0. With 36 sports covered and a solid, if unspectacular, odds rating (3.0), Virgin Bet is a well-built modern sportsbook rather than a specialist, with just enough racing-specific flavour to earn its place here.
Get the Virgin Bet welcome offer.
Pros
- Unique Money Back on ITV Race promotion, not found elsewhere on this list.
- Extra Places included.
Cons
- BOG doesn't open until 10am.
- Odds rating (3.0) trails the leaders in this list.
11. BoyleSports

| UKGC Licence Number | 39469 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe Card, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | 2 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Acca Boost, 2nd to Fav, Fail To Start, BOG |
BoyleSports opens position 11 with a Total of 11.0, built on Irish bookmaking heritage and one of the widest sportsbooks on this list at 41 sports. BOG opens at 8am on all UK and Irish racing, and BoyleSports holds two genuinely rare promotions: money back as a free bet if your horse finishes 2nd to the SP favourite (shared with just one other bookie, Kwiff) and Fail to Start/Finish cover (shared with just one other bookie here).
Live streaming covers "most sports" depending on the event rather than a fixed list, Extra Places is included, and an Acca Loyalty scheme rewards regular multiple bettors with a free acca after every five placed. It's a well-rounded racing offering from a bookmaker that has been setting odds on Irish racing for decades.
Get the BoyleSports welcome offer.
Pros
- BOG from 8am on all UK and Irish racing.
- Two rare promos: 2nd to SP Fav and Fail to Start/Finish cover.
- Acca Loyalty scheme, free acca every five bets.
Cons
- Live streaming coverage is event-dependent rather than guaranteed.
- Northern Ireland customers are excluded from some welcome offers.
12. BetTOM

| UKGC Licence Number | 64959 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Email) |
| Football Promos | Odds Boost, Acca Boost, First Past The Post, BOG |
BetTOM sits at position 12 with a Total of 10.7, and the standout figure is 41 sports covered, matching BoyleSports for breadth despite being a far less established name in the UK market. Its main racing-specific feature is Double Result Payout, a promotion also held by several other operators further down this list.
The gap shows in the fundamentals that matter most to racing punters: neither Best Odds Guaranteed nor live streaming appear in BetTOM's offer data at all, a genuine step down from every bookmaker ranked above it here. Odds (3.0) and stats coverage (1.0) are both middling.
Get the BetTOM welcome offer.
Pros
- Acca Insurance and Cash Out both available.
- Simple 50%-of-first-day-losses welcome offer, capped at £25.
Cons
- Far less established brand recognition than the bookies above it.
13. Ladbrokes

| UKGC Licence Number | 54743 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | High |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, PayPal, Skrill, Neteller, PaySafe Card |
| Withdrawal Time | Instant |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, BOG |
Ladbrokes lands at 13 with a Total of 10.5, backed by solid odds (4.0) and BOG from 8am, matching the market's earliest cut-off times. A sibling brand to Coral under GVC Holdings (though the two run entirely separate accounts), Ladbrokes carries genuine racing heritage, Extra Places, and the eye-catching £100k Placepot Guaranteed pool bet on selected days.
Ladbrokes' promotions score of 2.0 sits below the top half of this list, but the mix that is there carries weight: Extra Places on qualifying races and the £100k Placepot Guaranteed give racing punters two genuinely headline offers, even if the everyday promotions menu is thinner than rivals like BetGoodwin or QuinnBet. With 36 sports covered and 2UP early payout available across multiple sports, Ladbrokes reads as a betting-shop-heritage brand that has translated its core strengths online without over-investing in racing-specific extras.
Get the Ladbrokes welcome offer.
Pros
- BOG from 8am, matching the earliest on-the-day bookies in this list.
- Extra Places and £100k Placepot Guaranteed.
Cons
- Promotions score (2.0) trails most of the top half of this list.
14. Betway

| UKGC Licence Number | 39372 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | High |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, PayPal, Neteller, PaySafe Card |
| Withdrawal Time | 2 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, BOG |
Betway sits at 14 with a Total of 9.7, built on the strength of one of the widest live-streaming portfolios on this entire list, horse racing, football, tennis, basketball, esports, darts, table tennis and baseball. BOG opens at 9am, and as a global brand operating since 2008 with more than two million customers and a partnership with ambassador Thierry Henry, Betway is a thoroughly established name.
Betway's promotions have now been confirmed to include Extra Places for horse racing, closing what had been a gap between the spreadsheet and Betway's own offers page. Combined with its wide streaming line-up and 9am BOG, that gives Betway a genuinely rounded racing package for a bookmaker sitting mid-table on this list.
Get the Betway welcome offer.
Pros
- One of the widest live-streaming line-ups on this list, horse racing included.
- Extra Places now confirmed among its horse racing promotions.
Cons
- Debit card deposits only for the welcome offer.
- Promotions menu still lighter than the specialists higher up this list.
15. Betano

| UKGC Licence Number | 39576 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social) |
| Football Promos | Odds Boost, BOG |
Betano headquartered in Athens and legally authorised to operate in the UK, ties for 15th with a Total of 9.5. Its racing offer is currently built around a single Odds Boost promotion, and neither Best Odds Guaranteed nor live streaming appear in the data, a sign that Betano's UK racing product is still maturing relative to the longer-established names above it.
Betano's welcome offer has occasionally been built specifically around a horse racing qualifying bet, which suggests some racing focus behind the scenes even if it isn't yet reflected in permanent promotions. With a maximum payout cap of $200 million and a broad international sportsbook behind it, Betano is one to watch rather than an immediate racing recommendation.
Get the Betano welcome offer.
Pros
- Odds Boost available on racing markets.
- Extremely high maximum payout cap on BOG.
Cons
- Racing-specific promotions are limited to a single boost type.
- Newer to UK racing than most of this list's other entrants.
16. Bet Dukes

| UKGC Licence Number | 39335 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, Skrill, Neteller, Apple Pay, PayPal |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Email) |
| Football Promos | Extra Places, Odds Boost, First Past The Post, Cash Back |
Bet Dukes ties for 15th on Total score (9.5) and stands out immediately for scale: 43 sports covered, the widest count anywhere on this list, from a bookmaker that only launched in 2020 (UKGC licence 39335). Weekend Sports Cashback and a Double Result/FPTP promotion give it some racing relevance, and Cash Back is shared with a further fifteen bookies on the wider sheet.
As with several newer names in this list, Best Odds Guaranteed doesn't appear in BetDukes' offer data at all, and its live-streaming score (1.0) doesn't yet translate into any specific racing coverage worth noting that would make it stand out. It's a bookmaker built for broad appeal first, with racing as one market among many rather than a specialism.
Get the Bet Dukes welcome offer.
Pros
- Weekend Sports Cashback.
- Offers First Past The Post.
Cons
- No Best Odds Guaranteed listed.
17. talkSPORT BET

| UKGC Licence Number | 39576 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, Google Pay, Apple Pay |
| Withdrawal Time | 24 hours |
| Customer Support | 24 hours (Web Chat, Social, Email) |
| Football Promos | Odds Boost, BOG |
talkSPORT BET launched in 2022 in partnership with the BetVictor Group and licensed by the UKGC, ties for 17th with a Total of 9.2. Its standout racing feature is "No Horsing Around", money back if your horse loses all realistic chance at the start of the race, the same concept as BetVictor's "Run For Your Money" under a different name, reflecting the shared ownership between the two brands.
BOG opens at 9am, matching its sister brand, and live streaming covers horse racing only. With 27 sports covered, talkSPORT BET leans on its broadcast media branding and a simple, engaging promotions style (Bring It On, Lucky Dip) more than a deep racing-specific menu beyond that one standout protection.
Get the talkSPORT BET welcome offer.
Pros
- "No Horsing Around" - money back if your horse loses all chance at the start.
- BOG from 9am.
- Backed by the BetVictor Group's established sportsbook infrastructure.
Cons
- Promotions score (1.0) is low for this list.
18. MetaBetting

| UKGC Licence Number | 61486 |
| Customer Fund Segregation Rating | Medium |
| Payment Options Include | Debit Cards, Apple Pay |

MetaBetting, launched in the UK in 2023 and owned by independent operator Clarkson Bell Ltd, ties for 17th with a Total of 9.2. Its racing promotions (Odds Boosts, Extra Places and Cash Back) are all present but shared with a wide range of other bookies rather than distinctive, and neither BOG nor live streaming appear in its data.
With 24 sports covered and a straightforward, no-frills welcome offer, MetaBetting reads as a young operator still building out its full racing product rather than one currently competing at the sharp end of this list. Worth revisiting as the brand matures.

Swifty Sports, launched in the UK in 2022 by Swifty Global Ltd and since expanded into Ireland, South Africa and Malta, sits at 19 with a total of 9.0. For a relatively young bookie, it punches above its weight on racing promotions: it's one of only four betting sites on this list with a Bet Builder Boost, and it also offers Double Result/FPTP and Extra Places, a deeper racing promotions set than several longer-established names ranked above it.
What's missing is the fundamentals: neither BOG nor live streaming are offered by Swifty Sports, and its 23-sport count is the joint-narrowest here (if that matters to you). It's an operator worth watching as it builds out the rest of its offering to match its promotional ambition.

Pros
- One of only four bookies here with a Bet Builder Boost.
- Double Result/FPTP and Extra Places also available.
- Odds Boosts included.
Cons
- No Best Odds Guaranteed listed.
- Still a young, less proven brand in the UK market.
20. BetUK

BetUK, owned by LeoVegas Gaming PLC and launched in 2021, closes out our Top 20 with a Total of 8.8. It offers a genuinely useful live-streaming package covering horse racing and greyhounds, plus an Acca Club paying up to 200% extra winnings on qualifying accumulators, a solid, if unspectacular, all-round package.
The number worth flagging is BOG timing: BetUK's Best Odds Guaranteed doesn't open until 11am, the latest cut-off of any bookmaker on this entire list. For punters who like to lock in prices early in the morning, that's a genuine practical drawback rather than a minor detail.

- Acca Club worth up to 200% extra on qualifying accumulators.
- Live streaming on horse racing and greyhounds.
Cons
- BOG doesn't open until 11am, the latest of any bookie on this list.
- Welcome offer excludes non-UK/Ireland horse racing.

Horse Racing Betting Markets
There are a number of different bets that you can make when having a flutter on the nags. We'll run through the most popular types of bets that people place, explaining what those bets are, plus the pros and cons behind opting to make them.
Win Betting
This is the simplest bet that you can make on a horse race, or any competition for that matter. A win bet is betting on a horse to win the race. If the horse comes first you'll get your stake back, plus the winnings on top (at whatever price it was when you made the bet). If it loses, you don't get anything. Punters can usually choose between taking the odds at the time of the bet, or opting for SP, which means "starting price". This gives you the odds on the horse at the start of the race, regardless of whether they've shortened or lengthened.
Each Way Betting
When you bet each way you are actually making two bets. The first is for your horse to win, and the second is for your horse to place (finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd, typically. although this can go up to four, five, or more places depending on the race). Because it's two bets, you have to place double your stake, so if you place a £5 bet each way, you must give your bookie £10 – £5 for each bet. For big races, like the Gold Cup or Grand National, bookies often offer promotions where they increased the number of places paying out. If your horse wins the race, then you win both bets.
Betting Without the Favourite
A very popular bet if one race has a heavy, heavy favourite at really short odds. It allows punters to exclude the favourite horse from the betting and win money on other horses in the field. You'll win your bet if your selected horse wins the race, but also if it finishes 2nd to the favourite.
Multiple Bets
Beyond the above, simpler bets, there are plenty of multiples that punters can place. This involves betting on a number of different horse in different races, with you bookie combing these bets into different types of multiple bets. The most common example of this is a Lucky15. This involves betting on four horses in four different races, with single bets placed on a. four to win, but also on two of them winning, on three of them winning and on all four winning. The bets involving two or three winners are also matched across the different horses so that all possible combinations are covered. In total, it means placing 15 different bets in one (hence the name). The actual amount that you place will be 15 times your stake. Add another horse and it becomes a Lucky31, a sixth horse makes it a Lucky63 and so on. They are very difficult to win, but mean huge potential winnings in the unlikely scenario that they all win.
Horse Racing Multiple Bets
Accumulator - This bet can in theory be as many horse racing selections as you wish. You can back win or place accumulators, but all of them must win in win accumulators and all must place in place accumulators.
Trixie - A trixie is 4 bets involving 3 selections in different events. The bet includes 3 doubles and 1 treble. Two of your selections must be successful to get a return.
Patent - A Patent consists of 7 bets involving 3 selections in different events. The bet includes a single on each selection, 3 doubles and 1 treble. If one selection is successful you get a return.
Yankee - A Yankee consists of 11 bets involving 4 selections in different events. The bet includes 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.
Lucky 15 - A Lucky 15 consists of 15 bets involving 4 selections in different events. The bet is made up of 4 singles, 6 doubles, 4 trebles, and 1 fourfold. If one selection wins, bookmakers will often give a consolation to the returns like double or treble the odds. If all four selections win, then often bookmakers will give a bonus of 10% or more to total returns.
Canadian - A Canadian is also known as a Super Yankee and is made up of 26 bets involving 5 selections in different events. The bet includes 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds plus an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return.
Lucky 31 - A Lucky 31 has 31 bets. It is made from 5 selections in different events. The bets include 5 singles, 10 doubles, 10 trebles, 5 fourfolds and an accumulator. As with the Lucky 15, if only one selection wins, returns are often paid to double or treble the odds. If all five selections win, a bonus is often paid of 15% upwards to the total returns. If you place and each way Lucky 31, normally the bonus is only paid on the win part of the bet.
Heinz - A Heinz is made up of 57 bets and it name comes from the 57 varieties which the baked bean making company once had. This bet involves 6 selections in different events. The bet includes 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 five folds and an accumulator. A minimum of two of your selections must be successful to get a return.
Lucky 63 - Like a lucky 15 and 31 but with another selection. It consists of 63 bets involving 6 selections in different events. The bet includes 6 singles, 15 doubles, 20 trebles, 15 fourfolds, 6 five folds and an accumulator.
Super Heinz - Another selection added to a Heinz. A Super Heinz is made up of 120 bets involving 7 selections in different events. The bet includes 21 doubles, 35 trebles, 35 fourfolds, 21 five folds, 7 sixfolds and an accumulator. A minimum of 2 of your selections must be successful to get a return, below is an example of an each way Super Heinz.

Simple Horse Racing Betting Strategies
There are plenty of different strategies applied to horse racing betting, with various tipsters all claiming that their own is the best. The important thing is that you do what you think is right, but there are some common factors that absolutely should be considered.
Study the Form
This is true of making any bet in any sport on any athlete, team or in this case, horse. Are they free from injury? How have they been doing recently? Did they win their last race? Did they look good doing so, or was it a struggle? Were there any mitigating factors to consider? And so on. It doesn't actually involve a lot of expertise to take a quick look at how a horse has performed recently, and it's one of the best indicators for how a horse will perform in the future.
Check the Going
Environment plays a big part in horse racing, just as with other sports. When some one is racing talks about "the going" they are discussing how hard or soft the ground is that the race is going to run on. The ground can be hard, in the summer months, and will obviously get softer and softer in the winter, with everything in between. Some horses love the hard ground, while others want soft ground. It's an important factor to consider and means that you can rule out particular horses based on the going if it doesn't suit them.
Trainers and Jockeys
Although the trainer and jockey aren't as important as the horse itself, they are an indication of money, expertise and resource. Generally, the most successful trainers are the ones with the biggest budget and, as a result, that tends to mean the best horses, too. Generally, these trainers will win more races in a year than those with smaller stables and yards. Likewise, the best jockeys will get to pick the best horses in races, and each trainer will have a favourite jockey that use in big races.
You won't win all your bets by blindly backing every horse that the biggest trainer or jockey rides, but keeping an eye and following these trainers isn't a bad starting point. Beyond this, you can start looking at which races, or courses, particular trainers do well at, and factor that into your decision-making as you gain more and more knowledge.
How to Choose Best Horse Racing Betting Sites
🔒 Trustworthy
With over 80 online bookmakers licensed in the UK, we only list those vetted by the UK Gambling Commission and good for horse racing in our bookmakers guide. Betting with non-licensed bookmakers offering horse racing betting can be risky and may lead to complications in case of disputes. For your peace of mind, always check if a betting site holds a valid license through the Gambling Commission website.
✅ Reliable
Not all licensed horse racing bookmakers meet our reliability criteria. We exclude those with a track record of pending payments, shifting terms and conditions, and poor customer service. While we highlight these issues in our reviews, the worst offenders don’t make our list.
🟢 Low Risk
Small, new companies in the UK market may pose higher risks due to potential cash flow issues. However, if they are UK Gambling Commission-registered, they must meet financial solvency criteria. Larger, more established companies typically present lower risks. While it's rare for bookmakers to close without honouring bets, choosing established operators for long-term (ante-post) wagers is advisable. Diversifying your bets across multiple bookmakers can also mitigate risk.
🌟 Reputable
Reputation is best gauged through user experiences. We gather over 500 user reviews from the OLBG community to offer detailed insights into various UK betting sites. These reviews cover customer service experiences and how disputes were resolved.
👥 Player-Friendly Terms and Conditions
We meticulously analyse each betting site's terms and conditions, withdrawal policies, and deposit terms. Some sites may impose charges for certain transactions or inactivity, so it's crucial to be well-informed. Our community reviews and research highlight these details to ensure you get fair terms.
Five Ways To Choose The Best Betting Sites For Horse Racing
Finding the best bookie for horse racing depend on what it is that you want as a bettor, because there are plenty of different types of bettors all looking for slightly different things. There is also a huge number of betting sites to choose from, all offering different things, so it becomes a matter of seeing what bookie offers what, and working out how much those different factors matter to yourself.
Horse Racing Betting Sites with Best Odds Guaranteed
Best Odds Guaranteed – often shortened to just "BOG" – is fairly common, although bookies are starting to drop it a bit more now than they used to. BOG means that a bookie will guarantee you that you will get the best odds on a horse from a selected time (usually the morning of a race), right up until the race starts. For example, if you back a horse at 5/1, but at some point between placing that bet and the start of the race, the odds drift out and become 8/1, the bookie will give you the extra value and those 8/1 odds, without you having to do anything.
It takes the decision-making process around trying to determine whether a horse odds will change away from the punter, and gives them one less thing to worry about. Not all betting sites offer BOG, so if it matters to you, check beforehand.
Horse Racing Betting Sites with Live Racing
Most people who bet on a race want to watch that race and see how their horse does. If it's a big race on a Saturday at a big meet then there's a good chance it'll be on TV, but that's not the case for most races. There are, as a result, a large number of betting sites that live stream races. This means that you can bet, then watch how your bet does, all in the same place.
Most big bookies – bet365, William Hill, Ladbrokes and so on – offer live streaming as part of their service, but there are some variations. At some betting sites you just need to be logged in, some require you to have placed a bet in the last 24 hours, or have a positive amount of money in your account, and some require you to have placed a bet on the race in question. All of these should be clearly signposted, and may affect which betting site it is that you choose.
Horse Racing Betting Sites and Free Bets
Free bets are a standard part of promotions that betting sites offer punters. Pretty much every bookie will offer free bets, or similar, when you open an account with them as a way of attracting new customers. Beyond that there will be regular offers to keep an eye on, and sometimes bonuses and rewards if you are a regular and loyal customer.
These tend to be things like getting a free bet back when you place a bet on a particular race, or you money back as a free bet. Offers like this become much more commonplace for big meets, like Cheltenham or Ascot, so keep your eyes peeled. However, don't base your entire decision about using a bookie based purely on these offers.
Horse Racing Betting Sites and Price Boosts
Price Boosts are probably the most popular promotion that betting sites offer at the moment. Most bookies do it, and clearly signpost them in an attempt to get punters to make bets that they may not have considered beforehand. These can be as simple as a horse that is 2/1 to win a race, being boosted up to 5/1. On occasion these get boosted massively, right up to 20/1, 30/1, 50/1 and so on, but often with a limit (often just £1) on the amount that you can bet. These really big boosts are usually just offered to new customers, too.
With smaller boosts, a horse going from Evens to 2/1, for example, these happen pretty much daily, and have either no limit or stakes, or much higher ones, and are there for any member to take advantage of. Enhanced odds taken regularly give you a better chance of making money over time. There are also chances to back horses in multiples at bigger odds.
Horse Racing Betting Sites and Multiples
In addition to backing horses as a single bet, you also want the opportunity to have horse racing bets where you place selections in doubles, trebles and other types of multiple bets, as mentioned above in the types of bet section.
For example, there is a bet called a Yankee where you have four horses and effectively combine them in doubles, trebles and a four-fold. Make sure that you have a bookmaker account where there is the option to place these types of bets. On a similar note, you should choose a racing betting site where the maximum stake is as high as you need it to be. Some bookmakers cap the stake size for every day races and it can be frustrating when you’re not able to bet at the amount you want to.
Horse Racing Betting Sites Odds
This is often one of the biggest deciding factors in people making bets, especially experienced bettors who "line shop" around on different betting sites to find the best value. Usually, they will have a horse in mind that they want to bet on, and check lots of different sites to see which bookie offers the horse at the longest odds, and so gives them the most winnings. Ultimately, there has never been a better time to bet on horse racing due to the sheer range of choice available. There are dozens of bookmakers available and they are falling over themselves when it comes to opening a betting account. Offering the best odds is a way of a bookie trying to make itself stand out among its competitors.
How to Bet on Horse Racing
Betting on horse racing is as popular as it’s ever been and it definitely is a remarkable thing to see this sport defy the betting trends, shifts and tides of time, never allowing the emergence of other sports such as tennis and most notably football to ruin its betting reputation.
Horse race betting can be extremely profitable and that’s definitely one strong argument in favour of its popularity in betting circles. It can also drag you down if you’re not careful enough and if you don’t know what you’re doing. Learning to make the right bets, interpret the market and betting selections will help you improve your own odds of winning and here we’ll try to provide you with all the essentials on how to bet on horse racing.
Types of Horse Racing
So, you have finally decided to take your passion for horse racing to a higher level and want to test your skills and apparent knowledge on the sport through betting on it? As avid betting aficionados we support the efforts and applaud the courage. Still, before you go knees deep into the exciting horse racing betting world make sure to get all the facts straight and learn the terminology – which is plenty in horse racing – just so you won’t get in any sort of problems of perhaps not understanding what’s there to bet on and how to do it.
The first thing you need to understand is that, unlike football where you have the same model just in various competitions, horse racing includes almost different kinds of the same sport with its different types.
Most common types of horse racing are:
- Flat Racing
- Jump Racing
- Harness Racing
- Endurance Racing
Horses galloping directly between two points around a straight or more likely oval track is called flat racing. Jump racing involves horses running over different obstacles and this form of racing is usually referred to as Steeplechasing which in the UK and Ireland is best known as National Hunt racing – one of the most popular kinds as well. Ultimately, endurance racing is a race in which a horse travels across country over extreme distances.
Horse Racing Terminology
Once you cover the types of horse races, as a horse racing punter wannabe you need to learn the elementary types of bets which widely differ from anything you’ll find in any other sport. This is why learning the terminology is crucial before you go on to wager money on horse racing.
Across the Board – this is a bet on a single horse to win, place AND show.
Show – now that we mentioned it above, show is a type of bet where your horse must finish 1st, 2nd or 3rd.
Place – your horse needs to come 1st or 2nd.
On the nose – you’re backing your horse to win only, one of the most popular and common betting options.
Daily Double – betting on two separate horses in consecutive races where each of your horses must finish first, with odds multiplied between horses for a lucrative win.
There is also a highly engaging set of bets that include two and more than two horses in a single bet. They might sound confusing and like they rather belong to an opera than a sport.
- Quinella
- Exacta
- Trifecta
- Superfecta
When it comes to Quinella, your horses need to finish 1st and 2nd in either order and this one’s considered a normal play to three horses. Exacta involves two horses that need to finish 1st and 2nd in exact order which is a riskier bet. Trifecta includes three horses which must finish 1st, 2nd and 3rd in exact order and this one can be a bit expensive and highly risky to go with. Ultimately, Superfecta is a bet extremely hard to win since it involves four horses in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.

Whilst this can lead to bigger wins, it is also harder to make a slow and steady profit than by betting on singles alone.

The favourite horse in a race will win around about 30% of the time in all races. This is of course a fluid figure and will fluctuate between other factors such as the course, month of the year or on different types of ground. It is worth investigating more specific favourite winning statistics on racing stats websites where you may be able to find where favourites win more or less often than the general 30% figure to find a betting angle.
