- Only one player (Francis Cobolli) outside the top 8 in the world has made the French Open final in the last ten years.
- Seven finals were contested by players both ranked in the top 5 in the world.
So finding an each way long shot to make the final outside of the world's top ten would have been largely fruitless.

We have seen Jelena Ostapenko win in 2017 ranked just inside the top 50, Marketa Vondrousova make the final in 2019 when ranked just inside the top 40 and 2020 saw world number 54 Iga Swiatek (now a four time French Open winner) stun the tennis world with a straight sets win over Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin. The 2021 final saw Barbora Krejcikova ranked 33 defeat Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova ranked 32. The 2026 tournament saw Maja Chwalinska ranked 114 make her first slam final.
- Predicting the finalists has been a little tricky with just two of the last ten finals contested by two players in the current top ten in the world. Although the top two in the world fought out the 2025 final.

Early Rounds Favs vs Dogs
How often does an underdog win in the early rounds of the French Open?
Across the last 10 French Open tournaments (2017-2026), the underdogs have performed better on the women's side of the draw, as at Wimbledon, winning 28.82% of first-round matches compared to 24.40% on the men's side.
- Men's 1st Round Underdog: 153 wins from 627 matches (24.40%)
- Women's 1st Round Underdog: 181 wins from 628 matches (28.82%)
Across the opening three rounds, the underdog win rate is consistent on both tours. On the men's side, it stays between 23.05% and 24.40%, whilst on the women's side it stays between 27.74% and 28.82%, meaning the women's underdogs have won more often in every one of those rounds.
Later Rounds Favs vs Dogs
How does the underdog record change in the later rounds of the French Open?
You might expect matches to become more balanced as the lower-ranked players get knocked out. On the men's side, that hasn't happened. From round four onwards, the favourite has won 84%, 78%, 82% and 90% of matches in each round, and the underdog win rate falls to 17.27% (24 wins from 139 matches), compared with 23.92% in the opening three rounds.
On the women's side, it does get more competitive. From round four to the semi-finals, underdogs have won 36.50% of matches (50 from 137), up from 28.58% in the opening three rounds. The semi-finals have been the closest round, with the underdog winning 45% (9 from 20). Only 1 of the 10 men's finals and 2 of the 10 women's finals have gone to the underdog.
French Open Correct Set Betting
What is the most common winning set score at the French Open?
The picture differs between the two tours, as the men play best of five sets and the women play best of three. Across the last 10 French Open tournaments (2017-2026), there do seem to be more clear-cut matches on the women's side.
On the women's side, a 2-0 win has occurred in 68.20% of matches (843), whilst a 2-1 win has made up the other 31.80% (393). The semi-finals have the highest proportion of straight-sets wins at 70% (14 of 20 matches), though the first round is almost identical at 69.59% from a much larger sample of 628 matches.
On the men's side, a 3-0 win happens much less often, in just 48.29% of matches (592). Round 4 has the highest proportion of 3-0 wins, at 54.67% (41 of 75), and round 3 (52.63%) is the only other round above 50%.
Of all men's matches, 31.73% have finished 3-1 (389) and 19.98% have gone the distance to a 3-2 scoreline (245). The quarter-finals have been the least likely to go to five sets, with only 2 of 37 matches (5.41%) ending 3-2.
ATP By Round
How do men's set scores change round by round at the French Open?
The chart below shows how the men's set scores change through the tournament. The 3-0 win rate stays in a narrow band of 45.45% to 54.67% from the first round to the quarter-finals, before dipping to 41.18% in the semi-finals. The quarter-finals stand out for the 3-1 scoreline, which accounts for 45.95% of matches (17 of 37). The later rounds are smaller samples, with 37 quarter-finals, 17 semi-finals and 10 finals across the ten tournaments, so four of the ten finals going to a fifth set is a very small sample.
WTA By Round
How do women's set scores change round by round at the French Open?
The chart below shows how the women's set scores change through the tournament. The 2-0 win rate is steady, staying between 64.94% and 70.00% in every round up to the semi-finals, with round four the lowest. The final is the outlier, with a 50/50 split between 2-0 and 2-1 wins, but that is a sample of just 10 matches (5 of each).
