I break betting odds news as it happens, so you’re never left behind when the market moves or a top offer lands.

  • Enzo Fernandez is now priced at evens to join Manchester City this summer, level with the option of staying at Chelsea at 4/5
  • The move follows City's heavy 3-0 Community Shield defeat to Arsenal, with new boss Enzo Maresca needing to strengthen his midfield following Rodri's expected departure
  • Fernandez was booed by sections of the Chelsea crowd during Saturday's pre-season friendly, amid ongoing speculation over his future

Difficult Start To The Maresca Era

It's fair to say Enzo Maresca's first game in charge of Manchester City didn't go to plan, and the fallout appears to be shaping the club's approach in the transfer market.

Bookmakers have reacted to Sunday's Community Shield, which saw City's midfield repeatedly overrun in a heavy 3-0 defeat to Arsenal, leaving Maresca with clear areas to address before the transfer window closes.

With Rodri reportedly set to leave for Barcelona, City's midfield options look considerably thinner than in recent seasons, and Sunday's defeat only served to highlight that vulnerability in stark terms against a strong Arsenal side.

It's against that backdrop that Enzo Fernandez, a long-term target for Maresca, has re-emerged as a serious option, with bet365 placing City at evens to sign him in the final fortnight of the window.

Fernandez's Difficult Weekend At Chelsea

Adding further intrigue to the situation, Fernandez endured a mixed reception of his own during Chelsea's pre-season friendly on Saturday, with sections of the Stamford Bridge crowd booing him upon his introduction as a substitute, while other supporters offered their backing.

The reaction came amid continued speculation over his long-term future, following reports the Argentine midfielder had informed the club of his desire to leave earlier in the summer.

Reports suggested Chelsea had set a deadline for City to meet their reported £120 million valuation last Friday, and with no bid submitted before that point, Chelsea are understood to now consider the matter closed for the time being.

Despite that, the betting markets clearly haven't ruled out a late twist, with City's price continuing to reflect genuine belief that a deal could still be revived before the window shuts.

What the expert says...
Yesterday's Community Shield result really does look like it could be the catalyst here. If Maresca's seen his midfield exposed that badly in his first game, you can understand why he'd push hard to reignite this deal.
