Early Rounds Favs vs Dogs

How often does an underdog win in the early rounds of Wimbledon?

Across the last 10 Wimbledon tournaments (2016-2026, with no tournament in 2020), the underdog has been more successful in the opening round on the women's side than on the men's side.

  • Men's 1st Round Underdog: 141 wins from 619 matches (22.78%)
  • Women's 1st Round Underdog: 177 wins from 625 matches (28.32%)

On the men's side, the underdog win rate rises gradually across the opening three rounds. On the women's side, there is a slight dip in the second round, but underdogs pass the 30% mark in the third round.

Later Rounds Favs vs Dogs

How does the underdog record change in the later rounds of Wimbledon?

On the women's side, the matches become more closely contested as the tournament progresses. In the fourth round, the underdog win rate rises to 39.47% (30 wins from 76 matches), before dropping to 35% in the quarter-finals and semi-finals.

On the men's side, the favourites tighten their grip. Only 23.29% of underdogs win in round four, falling to 21.05% in the quarter-finals and just 10.53% in the semi-finals (2 wins from 19 matches).

The finals are a small sample of only 10 matches each, but the underdog has won 2 of the men's finals and 5 of the women's.

Wimbledon Correct Set Betting

What is the most common winning set score at Wimbledon?

The picture differs between the two tours, as the men play best of five sets and the women play best of three. Across the last 10 Wimbledon tournaments (2016-2026, with no tournament in 2020), there do seem to be more clear-cut matches on the women's side.

On the women's side, a 2-0 win has occurred in 66.99% of matches (836), whilst a 2-1 win has made up the other 33.01% (412). The first round has the highest proportion of straight-sets wins, with 68.36% of matches ending 2-0.

On the men's side, a 3-0 win happens much less often, in just 46.78% of matches (574). Round 3 has the highest proportion of 3-0 wins, at 52.23%, and is the only round above 50%.

Of all men's matches, 33.09% have finished 3-1 (406) and 20.13% have gone the distance to a 3-2 scoreline (247). The quarter-finals are the most likely to go to five sets, with 36.84% (14 of 38) ending 3-2.

The later rounds are smaller samples, with 38 quarter-finals, 19 semi-finals and 10 finals across the ten tournaments.

WTA By Round
