Every online casino shouts about its offers, but how do you know if you can trust them? I test them, so you know where's worth playing & how to get genuine value.

Every game at casino sites carries a mathematical edge for the operator: that's unavoidable.

But the size of that edge is not fixed, and it varies considerably depending on which game you're playing.

Understanding which games carry the lowest house edge does not change the fundamental maths, but it does mean you can make a more informed choice about where you play.

2. Video Poker0.5%
3. Baccarat (Banker)1.06%

Blackjack assumes basic strategy, video poker assumes optimal strategy on 9/6 Jacks or Better, and French roulette applies to even-money bets with the La Partage rule.

The sections below cover each game in detail, with the best casino sites to play them at.

Best UK Casinos for Low House Edge Games

The house edge on a game isn't set by the game alone. It also depends on the exact version a casino offers and the rules it plays by, so two UK casinos can offer blackjack or roulette with noticeably different odds. When I choose casinos for this page, these are the things I look for:

  • Blackjack that pays 3:2: a few tables pay 6:5 on a blackjack instead, which adds around 1.4% to the house edge.
  • Player-friendly blackjack rules: fewer decks and a dealer who stands on soft 17 both reduce the edge slightly in your favour. My blackjack tips and tricks explain how to make the most of them.
  • French roulette with La Partage or En Prison: these special roulette rules halve the house edge on even-money bets to 1.35%, compared with 2.7% on standard European roulette.
  • Full-pay Jacks or Better video poker: the 9/6 pay table returns around 99.5% with optimal strategy, while reduced pay tables cost you noticeably more.
  • Baccarat with standard commission: the usual 5% commission on Banker wins keeps the house edge at 1.06%, while no-commission versions normally make up for it elsewhere, which pushes the edge up.

UK casinos show each game's rules and return to player (RTP) figure in its info or help screen. It's worth checking before you start playing, because a table with worse rules can cost you more than the difference between two completely different games.

Here are the UK casinos I rate for playing low house edge games, and why I've picked each one:

  • Instant Withdrawals
  • Excellent Game Selection
  • Smart Studio Technology on Pragmatic Games
  • Top Class Slot Games
  • Huge Casino Game and Slot Selection
  • World-Renowned Brand
  • Fastest Withdrawals
  • Brand New Platform
  • Top slots & live dealer games
  • Ability to filter by studio

Blackjack - From 0.5%

Blackjack provides a better chance of winning with strategy than most casino games, and if you can find a single-deck game, then you can be assured the house edge is lower than a multi-deck game.

Crucially, there is an element of skill involved with blackjack, so the most skilled players will be playing against that 0.5% house edge, while the uninitiated will increase the house edge themselves, probably closer to 2% by simply not being an expert.

American Blackjack

If you want to jump straight in, my guide to the best live blackjack sites in the UK should help find the right casino.

However, for those with a more methodical approach, I'd definitely recommend getting yourself up to speed on these blackjack tips and tricks.

If you're playing blackjack for the lowest house edge, MrQ is my top pick because it publishes the RTP for every game, so you can see exactly what you're getting before you play.

Its multi-hand classic blackjack returns 99.91%, Multi Hand Vegas Single Deck Blackjack returns 99.69%, and its standard Blackjack game returns 99.60%, pays 3:2 on a blackjack and takes stakes from £1.

Blackjack (Single Deck) - House Edge 0.5%

Blackjack Still Requires Some Skill
Knowing when to hit, stand, split or double down is what separates a 0.5% house edge from a 2% one. Basic strategy is the difference.

The edge will always be with the house, but if you want to lower your chance of losing, learn the game and practice. Not rocket science.

Slots - Up to 15%

Slots are the most played games at casinos, and there are dedicated slot sites that focus on nothing else.

They're also the game type where the house edge varies most dramatically.

At the lower end, well-rated slots can carry a house edge below 3%. At the upper end, particularly on progressive slot jackpots, it can reach 15% or higher.

If you want to compare slots by their return rates before choosing where to play, our guide to the best slots by RTP goes into this in detail.

Video Poker - House Edge up to 5%

Video poker sits in an interesting position on this page. It carries a house edge like every other casino game, but it is one of the few where the decisions you make during play can directly influence how large that edge is.

With an optimal strategy on variants like Jacks or Better, the house edge can fall below 0.5%.

That puts it alongside single-deck blackjack as one of the most competitive games in the casino for players who take the time to understand it.

Unlike slots, where the outcome is entirely outside your control, video poker rewards knowledge of basic poker hand rankings. For players who have that, it is worth taking seriously.

Roulette - House Edge 2.7% & Above

Roulette comes in several variations, and the one you choose has a direct impact on the house edge you are playing against.

The two most common are covered below.

Roulette (American Double Zero) - House Edge 5.26%

American roulette has one meaningful difference from its European counterpart: an extra zero pocket.

Where a European wheel has 37 pockets, an American wheel has 38. The payouts do not change to reflect that extra pocket.

The ball spins on a live roulette wheel

That is where the additional house edge comes from. The result is 5.26%, compared to 2.7% on a single-zero European wheel.

For a player who understands that difference, there is limited reason to choose the American version when both are on offer.

Top Tip: Play Single Zero Roulette
Shift the odds back in your direction by avoiding double-zero roulette. It does nothing but reduce your chances of winning.

Roulette (European single zero) - House Edge 2.70%

A European roulette wheel contains 37 pockets: numbers 1 to 36 and a single zero.

A winning bet on a single number pays 35/1. That gap between 37 possible outcomes and a 35/1 payout is exactly where the house edge sits.

Unlike blackjack or video poker, roulette involves no decisions that change the maths. The house edge is fixed regardless of how you bet.

The only choice that affects it is whether you play single-zero or double-zero.

My guide on the best live roulette sites will help you find the best site for you, but I've dropped a couple of recommendations below.

Baccarat - House Edge ~1.06%

Baccarat is one of the simpler card games to understand. Two hands are dealt, one for the banker and one for the player. You bet on which hand will win, or whether the round will end in a tie.

The tie bet is where the house edge climbs sharply. The Banker bet sits at 1.06%, while the Player bet is 1.24% which makes baccarat one of the more competitive games on this page. The tie bet carries a house edge of around 14%.

One thing worth knowing: winning banker bets typically carry a 5% commission.

Even accounting for that, the banker bet still holds a marginally lower house edge than the player bet. The difference is small, but it is there.

Craps - House Edge 1-16%

Craps is one of the more complex games in the casino in terms of rules, but the best bets available on the table are among the most competitive anywhere.

The pass line bet carries a house edge of 1.41%. The don't pass bet is marginally lower at 1.36%. Both are reasonable starting points for anyone new to the game.

The more notable feature of craps is the odds bet. Once a point is established, players can place an odds bet behind their pass line bet.

This bet carries a 0% house edge, making it the only bet in a casino where the maths is completely neutral. The catch is that you must have a pass line bet in play first.

For new players, the advice is to start with pass and don't pass bets and learn the odds bet from there. The proposition bets in the centre of the table carry house edges well above 10% and are best left alone.
