Lightning Roulette is Evolution's best-known twist on the classic game, and one of the most played live tables at UK casino sites.
It takes a standard European roulette wheel and adds random multipliers of up to 500x, which is why it plays so differently from ordinary roulette even though the rules are almost identical.
In this guide, I'll explain exactly how a round works, what each bet pays, the real RTP behind the multipliers and which strategies are worth your time.
If you already know the game and just want somewhere to play, my guide to the best Lightning Roulette casinos has my top picks.
What Is Lightning Roulette?
Lightning Roulette is a live dealer game from Evolution, streamed from a studio with a real host and a real wheel.
It follows European roulette rules, with a single-zero wheel of 37 numbers from 0 to 36, and you can place all the usual inside and outside bets.
What makes it different is the lightning round that happens before every spin.
Between one and five numbers are struck by lightning and given a random multiplier, and if one of those numbers wins while you have a straight-up bet on it, your payout is multiplied.
How to Play Lightning Roulette
If you've played roulette before, you'll pick up Lightning Roulette within a couple of spins. Every round follows the same four steps.
- Place your bets. You have a short betting window to put chips on the table, choosing inside bets on single numbers or small groups, outside bets such as red or black and odd or even, or a mix of both.
- Lightning strikes. Once betting closes, the host pulls a lever to start the lightning round, and between one and five numbers are struck, each one given a multiplier of between 50x and 500x.
- The wheel spins. The host spins the ball exactly as they would at a normal roulette table.
- You're paid out. If the ball lands on a Lightning Number and you have a straight-up bet on it, you're paid at the multiplier. Every other winning bet is paid at the normal rate.
Lightning Roulette Payouts and RTP
The multipliers are paid for by a lower standard payout on straight-up bets. Instead of the usual 35:1, a winning number without a multiplier pays 29:1, so a normal straight-up win is worth less than it would be at an ordinary table.
Every other bet pays exactly the same as standard European roulette.
| Bet | Pays |
|---|---|
| Straight up | 29:1, or 50x-500x |
| Split | 17:1 |
| Street | 11:1 |
| Corner | 8:1 |
| Six line | 5:1 |
| Dozen or column | 2:1 |
| Even-money bets | 1:1 |
Because those other bets are unchanged, their RTP matches a normal European table.
Straight-up bets are slightly lower, because over time the occasional big multiplier doesn't quite make up for the reduced 29:1 payout.
| Bet Type | RTP |
|---|---|
| Straight-up bets | 97.10% |
| All other bets | 97.30% |
In practice, that means straight-up bets carry a house edge of 2.9%, compared with 2.7% on everything else.

How the Lightning Multipliers Work
Between one and five numbers are struck on every spin, and each one gets its own multiplier of between 50x and 500x.
Only straight-up bets on a struck number get the multiplied payout. If you've covered that number with a split, corner or outside bet, you're paid at the normal rate.
A multiplier replaces the normal payout rather than adding to it.
A £1 straight-up bet on a number struck at 200x returns £200 in total, including your stake.
It's also worth being realistic about how often the multipliers land.
Even when five numbers are struck, the ball lands on one of them less than one spin in seven, and it only pays out at the multiplier if you've backed that exact number.
Most spins end without a multiplied win, so it's best to treat the big payouts as an occasional bonus rather than something to wait for.
Lightning Roulette Versions
Evolution has built several versions of the game, and the one you choose changes how often you'll see multipliers and how much a normal win pays.
| Version | What's Different |
|---|---|
| Lightning Roulette | 1-5 numbers, up to 500x |
| XXXtreme Lightning | Up to 10 numbers, up to 2,000x |
| First Person | Digital version, no live host |
XXXtreme Lightning Roulette is the high-volatility option. It can strike up to 10 numbers, and a double strike can push a multiplier as high as 2,000x, but a straight-up win without a multiplier pays just 19:1.
First Person Lightning Roulette is a digital version without a live host, which suits players who'd like to play at their own pace.
Some casinos also run their own branded tables, such as Unibet Lightning Roulette, which follow the same rules as the classic game.
Lightning Roulette Strategy
No strategy can beat the house edge in Lightning Roulette, because every bet carries a built-in edge of 2.7% or 2.9%.
What a strategy can do is shape how your session plays out, depending on whether you prefer steady play or the chance of a big multiplier.
Before any of the approaches below, set a budget and stick to it. That single decision makes more difference to how your session goes than any betting pattern.
Straight-Up Bets for the Multipliers
Straight-up bets are the only way to win a multiplier, so they're the natural choice if the big payouts are what attract you to the game.
The trade-off is that they lose far more often than they win, and a normal winning number pays just 29:1.
If you play this way, keep your stakes small and spread them across a few numbers, so your budget lasts long enough to give the lightning round a chance to land.
Combination Betting
Mixing a few straight-up bets with outside bets such as red or black gives you a steadier session.
The outside bets win close to half the time and keep your balance ticking over, while the straight-up bets keep you in line for a multiplier.
It won't change the house edge, but it makes the swings less extreme than betting on single numbers alone.
Progressive Systems Such as Martingale
The Martingale system involves doubling your stake after every losing even-money bet, on the basis that a single win will cover the losses before it. I wouldn't recommend it.
A losing run makes your stakes climb very quickly, and a £1 stake becomes £128 by the eighth spin.
You can hit the table's maximum bet or your own budget long before a win arrives, and the system does nothing to help you land a multiplier, because even-money bets never receive one.
My guide to roulette systems explains Martingale, Fibonacci and D'Alembert in more detail, including why none of them change the odds.

Tips Before Playing Lightning Roulette
- Know the payouts: remember that a straight-up win without a multiplier pays 29:1, not 35:1, so plan your stakes around that.
- Set your limits first: decide on a budget and a time limit before you start, and use the deposit limits your casino offers.
- Ignore hot and cold numbers: past results and stats trackers have no effect on the next spin or on which numbers get struck.
- Check any bonus terms: many offers exclude live casino games or count them towards wagering at a reduced rate.
- Try First Person if you're new: it lets you learn the game at your own pace without a live betting timer.
