  • The Great British Bake Off returns for Series 17 next Tuesday, 22 September, with Nigella Lawson joining the judging panel alongside Paul Hollywood after Prue Leith's departure.
  • Shannon Amy is the early favourite among the betting sites at 6/4 (40.0% implied probability), just ahead of Gabe Capes at 7/4 (36.4%).
  • Clara Satchell-Silva and Danni share third spot in the betting at 2/1 (33.3%), with eight of the twelve bakers currently priced between 3/1 and 7/2.

New Judging Line-Up Set As Twelve Bakers Enter The Tent

A new era begins for the Great British Bake Off next Tuesday, 22 September, when Series 17 gets under way with a fresh face behind the judging table.

Nigella Lawson steps into the tent as a judge alongside Paul Hollywood, having replaced Prue Leith following her departure, and it's fair to say the experts have taken plenty of interest in how the twelve new bakers will fare under the new pairing

Shannon Amy has emerged as the early favourite to lift the trophy, with the full field now priced up ahead of the opening episode.

According to Channel 4's release, Amy is a nature-loving foodie who dreams of bringing “a little forest magic” to the Bake Off tent.

A Big Season For The Judging Panel Too

While the bakers get most of the attention in the betting, Nigella Lawson's arrival is arguably the bigger story of Series 17.

Prue Leith spent a decade on the panel before stepping down, and bringing in a cook with Nigella's profile and following is a genuine change in tone for a show that's built much of its charm around the chemistry between its judges.

How viewers and the remaining bakers respond to that shift could end up shaping the tone of the whole series, quite aside from who eventually takes home the trophy.

What the expert says...
Shannon Amy heading the market this early always feels like a bit of a leap of faith, since we've had zero baking on screen yet, but there's clearly something in her background that's caught the experts' eye. I'd keep a close watch on Gabe Capes too at 7/4 as anyone described as an artist tends to bring real visual flair to showstoppers, and that's exactly the kind of thing that wins over judges in the tent.
