  • Bookmakers make it odds-on at 1/2 (66.7% implied probability) that there will be snow somewhere in the UK on Christmas Day this year, against 6/4 (40.0%) for No.
  • Edinburgh Airport is the shortest-priced UK location to see snow at 2/1 (33.3%), with Newcastle Airport next best fancied at 3/1 (25.0%).
  • William Hill's city-by-city market also stretches beyond the UK, with New York's JFK Airport matched with Newcastle at 3/1 and Paris the outright outsider at 7/1 (12.5%).

Odds-On For A White Christmas Somewhere In The UK

Christmas Day snow is one of the bookmakers' most enduring festive markets, and this year's early prices suggest real optimism that somewhere in the UK will wake up to a white Christmas.

It's currently odds-on at 1/2 that snow falls on the day itself, a price that always draws plenty of interest given how much of a talking point the possibility becomes every December, regardless of what the forecasters are actually saying at the time.

William Hill have also opened up a more detailed city-by-city market, covering everywhere from Edinburgh to Cardiff and even venturing beyond UK borders entirely with a couple of novelty inclusions further down the list.

Northern cities are more likely to see snow fall later this year, with the colder climate being the reason behind the lower prices.

New York (JFK International Airport)3/125.0%

Cardiff (Airport)5/116.7%
Birmingham (Airport)5/116.7%
London (London City Airport)6/114.3%
Paris (Charles de Gaulle International Airport)7/112.5%

Edinburgh's 2/1 price gives it an implied 33.3% chance of recording snow on Christmas Day, comfortably the shortest of any location on William Hill's list and a reflection of the city's typically colder December climate compared to further south.

New York's JFK Airport is matched with Newcastle at 3/1 (25.0% apiece), a reminder that this market casts its net well beyond UK shores.

Manchester and Leeds sit level at 4/1 (20.0%), with Cardiff and Birmingham next at 5/1 (16.7%). London's City Airport trails the home nations at 6/1 (14.3%), while Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport rounds out the list as the outright outsider at 7/1 (12.5%).

International Twist On A UK Tradition

What makes this year's market particularly interesting is just how far it stretches beyond the UK's own borders.

New York and Paris both feature alongside the usual spread of UK airports, giving the market an international flavour that goes well beyond the traditional focus on whether London, Edinburgh or Newcastle wake up to snow on the day.

It's a nice touch for a market that's traditionally been fairly parochial, and it means there's genuine global interest to follow as December approaches.

The Met Office's official criteria for a White Christmas only requires a single snowflake to be observed falling somewhere in the UK in the 24 hours of 25 December, which explains why the overall Yes/No market sits so heavily in favour of snow happening somewhere, even in years when much of the country stays largely dry.

What the expert says...
Edinburgh at 2/1 looks about right to me given how often the city's picked up snow in recent Decembers, but I wouldn't be shocked if that price tightens further once we get proper forecasts in a few weeks.
