  • Wrexham are the current favourite to be named UK City of Culture 2029, priced at odds-on 1/2
  • Sheffield sit as the clearest challenger at 6/4, with Portsmouth and Blackpool both trading at 2/1
  • A four-place shortlist is due to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport this autumn, with the winner expected before the end of 2026

Nine Places Battle For A Prestigious Title

The race for one of the UK's most prestigious cultural honours is well underway, with the longlist for UK City of Culture 2029 now confirmed.

Betting experts have moved quickly to price up the field, and with nine places all hoping to make it through to the next stage, this looks set to be a genuinely competitive process right through to the final decision.

Blackpool, Inverness and The Highlands, Ipswich, Middlesbrough, Milton Keynes, Portsmouth, Sheffield, Swindon and Wrexham all feature on this year's longlist, each hoping to follow in the footsteps of previous winners in securing the title and the cultural investment that comes with it.

Wrexham Set The Early Pace

At the top of the betting, Wrexham currently hold the shortest price at an odds-on 1/2.

The Welsh town has enjoyed significant national attention in recent years, and that heightened profile appears to be reflected clearly in the market's early assessment of its chances.

A price this short suggests the betting markets view Wrexham's bid as considerably stronger than the rest of the field at this stage of proceedings.

Behind Wrexham, Sheffield hold the next shortest price at 6/4, representing one of the larger cities on this year's longlist and a bid that will likely draw on the city's rich industrial and cultural heritage.

The Rest Of The Field Still In Contention

Further down the market, Inverness and The Highlands sit alongside Swindon, both priced at 3/1, offering a reminder of just how geographically diverse this year's longlist is.

Ipswich follows at 4/1, while Middlesbrough is priced at 9/2, and Milton Keynes rounds out the field at 5/1.

With a shortlist process still to come, there remains genuine scope for any of these places to make a strong case over the coming months.

What Happens Next In The Process

A four-place shortlist is due to be submitted to the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport in autumn 2026, narrowing today's nine-strong field down considerably before a winner is eventually confirmed.

That final announcement is expected before the end of 2026, meaning this year's market will likely see plenty of movement as the shortlist stage approaches and more becomes known about each bid's strengths.

What the expert says...
Wrexham as favourite makes complete sense given how much national attention the town's had in recent years, that profile really helps with a process like this. That said, I wouldn't write off Sheffield at all, it's got a genuinely strong cultural case as a major city. These bidding processes can shift a lot once the shortlist stage arrives and campaigns really ramp up, so I'd expect this market to look quite different by the autumn.
